Coming Soon — A Book by Robert Dreyfus

Embracethe Chaos.

36 years. Three roles. One hard-won perspective on leading when everything is breaking.

Most leadership books are written from one angle. This one is built from three: uniformed officer, defense contractor, and government civilian advisor — each with a different relationship to chaos, accountability, and the limits of authority.

About the Book

Chaos isn't the exception. It's the operating environment.

Most organizations are built for order. They plan for order, train for order, and evaluate performance against order. Then chaos arrives — and the institution discovers it has no framework for what comes next.

Embrace the Chaos is a leadership field guide built from 36 years inside defense and military operations. Not theory. Not case studies at a safe distance. Lived experience from inside institutions that value order above all else — and what happens when the chaos comes anyway.

The principles for navigating dysfunction remain exactly the same whether you're wearing a uniform, managing a contractor workforce, or advising from outside the hierarchy. This book is built on all three vantage points.

01

23 Years

The Uniformed Officer

Responsible for the mission. Accountable for the outcome. With the authority and the limitations that come with rank. Learning what chaos looks like from inside an institution that values order above all else.

02

Defense Contractor

The Contractor

Managing 175 to 260 people across five geographic locations. A contractor's chaos is different — the stakes, resources, and accountability all shift. The principles for navigating it do not.

03

Government Civilian

The Advisor

Close enough to see what was broken — yet outside the formal hierarchy. A freedom to call out issues that institutional filters and rank could not. The advisor without command authority who changes things anyway.
